 Iqbal Quadir the person who provide the idea of universal mobile access    throughout Bangladesh even in Rural areas. Mr. Iqbal Quadir is the founder and director of the Legatum centre of Development and mr.iqbal quadirjpgEnterpreneurship at MIT.Grameen Bank microcredit model and envisioned a business model is the inspiration of Mr, Iqbal Quadir to established of Grameenphone. Mr.Iqbal Quadir traveled back to Bangladesh after leaving his job as an investment banker in USA and then meeting and successfully raising money from New York based investor and PhilanthropistJoshua Mailman and also he worked for three years gaining support from various Organization including Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mohammad Yunus of Grameenbank and Norwegian telephone company Telenor.

 Grameenphone received their license from Bangladesh the ministry of post and Telecommunications on November  28, 1996 for cellular phone operation in Bangladesh. Grameenphone start their first operation in Bangladesh on March 26 , 1997 the independent day in Bangladesh.

 

Network

 Grameenphone has largest coverage of cellular network in Bangladesh. Grameenphone has 10000 base stations in more than 5700 location around Bangladesh. In present nearly 98% of the countries population is under the coverage of Grameenphone network. Grameenpone has invested Sum of BDT 107 billion to build the network infrastrueture since 1997. During the first three quarters of 2007 Grameenphone has invested over BDT 31 billion while in 2006 BDT 2100 crore was invested
